This is a question we receive often. The process to adopt a heeler from Texas Cattle Dog Rescue is very similar to most breed rescue groups. We follow this process to ensure both the happiness of the adopter and of the dog. The process can take a few days or a few weeks—it depends on the availability of you and your references. It also depends on the availability of our volunteers. TCDR is a 100% volunteer-run organization. We all work with TCDR because it’s our passion, but we have to fit it in between work, school and family commitments. Thanks in advance for your understanding!
Complete an adoption application—This is the first step in an adoption from TCDR. Please complete all sections of the adoption application. Completing this adoption application does not guarantee adoption of a dog from TCDR.
Chat with our adoptions manager—We’d like to get to know you a little better. Our adoptions manager will schedule a time for a brief phone call with you.
Verify personal and vet references, landlord approval—We want to know about you as a pet owner, so we contact personal references and your veterinarian(s). If you are a renter, we need to speak with your landlord, too.
Home visit—We want to see the environment where the dog will be living, so we conduct a short walk-through of your home and property and meet all occupants.
Meet and greet—Once approved, we’ll contact you about scheduling a time to meet the dog(s) you are interested in. This is the time for the approved applicant, their family and their current dog(s) to meet the potential dog and his/her foster parent.
Adoption—If all dogs and people get along and you and the foster parent agree that the meet and greet was a success, you will sign our adoption contract (here is a sample) and pay the adoption fee. You can take the dog home with you at the meet and greet. Congratulations on your new family member!
Follow up—We want to make sure the adoption is a success, so we touch base with our adopters.
Take a look at our adoptable dogs. If you have any questions about our process, please contact us.
